Join The Conversation! The Benefits of Social Media
Posted by: TheTwins on October 19, 2009

So why does your ministry need to get on social media?  What are the real benefits?

Let’s first define social media:

“Using online technology to create valuable conversation and mutually beneficially relationships.”

So the idea of social media involves:

  • understanding online technology (these are the FREE or low-cost tools people everywhere are using)
  • learning how this technology is IDEAL for creating valuable conversations (people talking about what God’s doing in your ministry)
  • exploring how to achieve real ROI for time spent on social media (benefiting everyone involved)

Now, here are 10 benefits that I hope will prove to you why your ministry needs to be harnessing the power of social media.

You can download your complimentary copy of our new e-book called “Join the Conversation: 10 REASONS WHY YOUR MINISTRY SHOULD BE USING SOCIAL MEDIA.”  (Thanks to RM for alerting us to an error – the new version is now fixed)

Some of the highlights include:

  • “EVERYONE’S DOING IT” – People are talking.  Lots of people.
  • “OUT OF SIGHT IS OUT OF MIND” - There’s a lot of clutter out there.  People are busy and there’s only so much information they can absorb.  They talk about, pray about and even contribute to that which is on their minds.
  • “POWER TO THE PEOPLE” -  People rally to stories that impact their lives and they share with their friends about organizations who are making a difference.
  • WORD OF MOUTH ON STEROIDS” - Social media is like word of mouth online – it is highly exponential and it costs you virtually nothing!
  • “WE’RE ON THE GO” – With the constant increase of use of portable communications devices and smart phones (i.e., iPhones and the Blackberry), people are getting information throughout the day and into the night.  And most of it is by using social media.
  • “SOMETHING TO RALLY AROUND” - People are hungering to be a part of something significant.  They want their time and their money to make a difference.  Social media is simply a powerful web of tools to enable that to happen in an inexpensive yet potentially big way.   What will you use social media to rally people to?

Interesting. Though I'm still on the fence personally about Twitter, I do like the approach John Piper is taking. http://www.desiringgod.org/ResourceLibrary/Tast.... I've also actually found good use of Twitter over the last few months when Google went down. First place I turned to learn more was Twitter due to its immediacy. But an intentional approach that avoids much of the "metooism" that exists around utilizing social media (including Twitter) is certainly a good idea. If you can follow that by introducing a "Getting Things Done" system geared for social media you might knock it out of the park.

Thanks swampboy (gotta learn the significance of that name). Your insights are spot-on! Just like any conversation, those who really shine are those who think of others (RTweets) and share valuable information that is helpful and resourceful. In balance, Twitter allows for some self-promotion, but the conversation takes on a higher purpose for ministries and churches when you extend your voice by looking to the interests of others first!

I have a small testimony of the importance of social media. I write devotionals and leave them on the ministries facebook once a week. After putting the devotionals up on the page I would get little to no traffic, and I honestly started to be discouraged from the idea of social media improving the ministries reach. One week after uploading the devotion, I received three personal emails from people who I never expected to here from. The three emails both encouraged me to keep writing because it was of great impact to their lives to read the devotions. Glory be to God that the amount of traffic to the devotionals has nearly doubled and soon our ministry will launch a website. I hope to get the twitter up and running soon. Thank you for this great e-book.
